We will spend today exploring your projects. Professor Jeremy Chen of studio art will lead our discussion of those projects.
As you look at images, think about what code you might want to see.
Because Chen is leading class, we won't do our normal preliminaries.

Too often, we let images just fly by us. It's nice to have an opportunity to sit down and look carefully at images.
Too often, we are only able to look at surface. We also have an opportunity to think about what's happening beneath the surface.
Lots of geometric work, fairly abstract.
In talking about these, we can consider some formal aspects.

KD and KN

Partial goal: To make a tree (something somewhat representational)
For the rest of the image, trying to have a pattern of lines to add a level of complexity.
Circles "all over the place, but kind of interesting". Pleasing to look at.
- Limited the number of colors so that they'd work with most of the backgrounds.
- Limited range of circle sizes to
Dimensionality: Laying things on top of each other.
The first one seems the most naturalistic. THe last one also looks a bit like microsystems - perhaps we've zoomed in on a snowflakes. Effects of tweaking.
The first one could be a Merimeko or sweedish design.
THe circles can give us a snese of depth - is this small or big.
First one has a very strong diagnoal.
The gradiant deals with depth
What changes make us think about nature/winter in the first one and more geometry in the last one.
The last one seems more like shapes. The parallel lines seems less natural and more geometric/artificial.
THe backgrounds also have a significant effect. The last one feels much more like it's just there. The others pull your attention away from the tree.
How do we read the figure and ground, and read the striations.

Four background colors to represent four seasons
The curvature, length, and positions of the stems change over time
Number of flowers changes over time
Chen: Think about the limits of things
Relationships between things; when do thsoe limits break?
Relate to the real world - there are limitations there.
Representational, but also clearly not a photograph.
How do we respond to thse compositionally?
- Appreciation of the large negative space to the right and below.
- Composition is different if we change the image shape. How do we read it in terms of gravity. (Think about the flowers falling.)
- Maybe we could have some more relationships with other things.
Relationships between the characters (and the background is one of your characters)
Gradual refinement / micro/macro
Peer comments
- "The curvature is nice (although I don't have the vocabulary to say so."
- "The colors work very well." (Chen: Clarity of relationship between fore and ground.)

DF and KS

Start with a background image and overlay different polygons. Invert colors to add dimensionality. Varied polygons, colors, positions, etc.
We get some "buzz"
Interesting perception issues: How do we see shapes
Camoflage
Seeing the whole and still discerning shapes; somewhat bizarre that we can do with this.
Deimsionality: What do you see as being on top or below?
Supposedly, warm colors come toward us and cool colors recede.
What's positive shape and what's negative ground?
"Rotating snakes optical illustion."
Color can "assault" our senses

Seems to be deonstructing the image
Do we go far enough in the charles bridge image?
The last seems about parts to make a shole.
Forces you to notice different details. Helps you notice different aspects: Yellowlight, difference between trees, and more.
Also how chefs deconstruct a dish - help people pay attention to the parts they had not paid we had't paid attention to beofre.
How do you look at it differnetly if you don't know the original.
