Introductory Notes

  • The consensus seems to be “Sam should talk a bit more.” So I’ll try to talk more, but not too much.
  • I have been asked to remind you that Friday is the deadline for (a) class withdrawals and (b) converting to/from S/D/F grading (Grinnell’s version of Pass/Fail).
  • Don’t forget to consider CSC-161 next semester.
  • We are changing the mathematics requirements for the CS major. MAT/CSC-208 will be renumbered to CSC-240 and will have a MAT-215 prerequisite. (You can still take MAT-218 instead of CSC-240.)
    • If you are a second year and plan to be a CS major, please take 208 this spring.
    • If you are a first year and plan to be a CS major, please continue in the Math sequence.
  • If you want to subject yourself to more Sam teaching, I’m also running a guided reading on board game design Tuesday/Thursday 8:00–9:50 a.m. Contact me with questions. (I’ll also send email to csstudents.)
  • I have dropped the tail recursion LA. Only one new LA this Friday!
  • MP3 did not work well, so I am cancelling it and giving those who got an S on it some tokens / other rewards. (Precise details to be determined.)
  • For the first time, the next MP is ready with lots of lead time! However, I have not yet tried redoing it in Scamper.

Administrative

My MP3 is “nearly correct”, can I still earn the cool bonuses?

Email me.

Tail recursion

Numeric recursion

Pop quiz

  • What is an alternative term for “pop”?
  • Testing: What are the parameters to test-case? (You need not get them in the correct order.)
  • Numbers: What’s the difference between / and quotient?
  • Drawings: List three functions to make shapes.
  • Anonymous functions: Write two versions of add3, one using o (and add1) and one using l-s or r-s.

Lab

  • Start/continue the numeric recursion lab
  • If you finish the numeric lab early, do the extra problems on either/both of numeric recursion and tail recursion.
