Introductory Notes

  • Happy lucky class 13!
  • Note that Scamper is now at 4.6.0.
  • LAs and grade reports to be distributed later today.
  • Expect email from me if you’re behind on LAs.
  • Congratulations to our football team for another victory!
  • Apologies: I was not able to get the autograder working for this mini-project.
  • There are a few of you who have already missed more than six readings. I’m considering the best way to deal with that issue. I would welcome suggestions via email.
  • I’ve made two minor changes to the grading policies.
    • 20 LAs now earns you an A+, rather than an A. Grinnell doesn’t let me award A+’s, but this makes some of the other grades more achievable.
    • You now start with four tokens rather than three.
  • The pictorial class rosters are available at the back of the classroom. You may not use them as a cheat sheet for Friday’s quiz, but you can use them as a study sheet.

Attendance

  • Practice for Friday’s quiz.

Some notes from the quizzes

  • There was some confusion on substring, even though you used it in the strings lab. (substring str start end)
    • We number characters starting at 0.
    • The second number in substring is the index of the first character not included in the result.
    • (substring "Television" 1 4) -> "ele"
    • Don’t forget to record information about procedures in your notebook (and on your cheat sheets).
  • Remember that o applies procedures right to left. That is, (o f g h), the resulting procedure applies h, then g, then f.
  • At this point, I expect something close to correct Scheme syntax on LAs, particularly if unclear syntax leaves open the question as to whether or not you understand the material.

Questions

Administrative questions

When else can I take a quiz?

Section 1 takes quizzes on Friday from 7:30–8:30.

Section 2 takes quizzes on Fridays from 10:30–11:30.

Section 3 takes quizzes on Fridays from 3:30–4:30.

What do I do if I’m missing a lot of quizzes?

Try coming at some of the other times. Each quiz should take no more than fifteen minutes, so you should be able to try four during a typical class plus extra session.

Get help! Sign up for times with Sam, visit with the evening tutors, go to mentor sessions, etc.

What should the CHANGES.txt file have?

A summary of what you’ve changed. E.g.,

  • I forgot to write a procedure for part 2. My new procedure is called make-eye and it gets used in making the face that is my-image.

Reading questions

Sam didn’t get to these.

Lab

Don’t forget to reload Scamper.

Remember: If you’re asked to load a Racket file, you probably have the old version of the lab.
