Introductory Notes

  • I am observing Yom Kippur and will not be in class today. I have an appropriate substitute here; they will mostly help with lab.
  • I sent out an email message late Sunday night, primarily about the quizzes.
  • We will be continuing this lab on Wednesday. Please do not turn anything in today. Please plan to return to the same seat with the same partner.
    • If we finish lab early on Wednesday, we have other things to do.
  • I wrote this eboard somewhat at the last minute. It may have some infelicities.
  • Please bring questions on MP2 to class on Wednesday.
    • I made a small change to mp2. Rather than writing hsv->string and string->hsv, you should write hsv-to-string and string-to-hsv. If you’ve already downloaded the code, please make the update.
  • Unfortunately, I have meetings scheduled during office hours on Tuesday. I’ll do my best to be available in my office the following times. (You can email me to schedule them; you may also stop by, but those who schedule have priority.)
    • Tuesday: 10:30–11:30 a.m. and 1:00–2:00 p.m.
    • Wednesday: 1:15–2:30 p.m.
    • Thursday: 8:00–10:00 a.m. (possibly 4:00–5:00 p.m.)

About CS Table

Next week at CS Table we will discuss the growing push toward “Digital Sovereignty,” as countries around the world look to decouple or at least insulate themselves from US-based technology companies. The readings below describe an overall philosophy for the digital sovereignty movement (EFF), a recent policy change in Switzerland that is part of this broader initiative (It’sFOSS), and a German fund that supports free and open-source software as part of this initiative (Sovereign Tech Agency). Please complete the first two readings, and quickly review the overview and supported programs on the Sovereign Tech Fund site to prepare for our discussion.

About “In C”

When Terry Riley brought 10 musicians into a New York City studio in 1968 to record an album-length version of his composition “In C”, he couldn’t have known how profoundly he was about to affect the course of contemporary music, both popular and experimental. Minimalist music was around before In C, but this was the album that really put that approach on the map. Influenced by everything from Indian music to John Cage’s chance-oriented pieces, this modal marvel is a cyclical composition consisting of short, repetitive phrases that each player chooses spontaneously from the score, creating a hypnotic interlocking of lines based around a central idea. Piano, vibes, marimba, woodwinds, horns, and viola meld together in a slowly shifting, pointillist landscape. When the album was released, composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass were following minimalist paths as well, but they were still pretty far underground. In C not only broke through to avant-garde ears, it proved profoundly influential to adventurous rock and jazz artists.
