Questions

Administrative

When will I have a chance to make up the conditionals quiz?

On the next SoLA.

In general, if you miss quiz LAs or SoLA LAs, you make them up on the next SoLA. There are a few exceptions.

What’s the style quiz going to be like?

This is generally not a good question to ask at 10pm the night before the quiz.

The LAs page has sample problems for most LAs.

Lists

Why is reduce in random order?

In practice, if we’re doing a “parallel reduce”, we can’t predict the order. Hence, we try to give you experience with something similar.

Why is map given that name?

I have no idea.

A “map” is another name for a function (something that converts one thing to another).

It could be an acronym for “multiply apply procedure”.

A random web page tells me that

[map] comes from the mathematical phrase, “mapping over a domain”, meaning to apply a function to each of the elements in a domain. The mathematical phrase is based on the metaphor of a surveyor walking, one step at a time, over an area [they are] mapping.
