Administrative stuff

Notes and News

  • I was glad to see that Wednesday’s lab went pretty well in terms of time. (There’s a first time for everything!)
  • You should know the drill on evening tutoring. Please use the evening tutors. Please consider visiting them in person (if you are on campus).
    • Tutors can also work with you on learning things, such as tracing.
  • I was surprised at how few people attended class yesterday. Remember that the SoLA review classes can be useful!
  • The local bindings problem on the SoLA ended up being harder than I anticipated because it combined recursion on local bindings. I’ve created a second one that you may want to take.
    • SoLA 2x
  • Just in case it’s not clear, I will rarely answer questions about LAs while a SoLA is “live”. It doesn’t seem fair to do so only if a student happens to catch me on Teams.
    • I do ask that you let me know asap if you notice errors in LAs.

Upcoming activities and other token-earning things

Events

  • Mentor session Sunday at 1 pm. Unpack recursion!
    • Write it up to get a token.
    • Or SoLA questions
    • Or both!
  • CS Table Monday, 1 March 2021 at noon. Chapter 1 of the book.
  • March 2, 10:00-11:30 or 7:00-8:30: Restorative Justice Community Event
  • WGMC presents Ethics and Social Justice in CS. 6pm, Wednesday, 3 March 2021.
  • Journalism Ethics Workshop, 7:00-8:30 pm, Thursday, March 4 and Tuesday, March 9
  • Support a local bakery (such as GrinCity)
    • No extra credit for giving me donuts, even if I may be shaped a bit like Homer Simpson.

Upcoming work

I’m not sure if all of these links are correct. Let me know if any are not.

Q&A

What happens if I get an LA right and then get it wrong later?

I accept that you’ve shown knowledge at least once and you get credit.

There are two readings for class 21. Why?

Sam is incompetent. Didn’t you know that already? I’ll fix at the start of lab.

What kinds of characteristics might we look at?

Percentage of times Jane is mentioned vs. percentage of times Homer Simpson is mentioned.

Average sentence length.

Number of sentences that include the word “love”.

Look for more than two characteristics (although two will suffice) and something creative.

Can you fix the due time on the numeric recursion lab?

No.

Any more hints on the MP?

I want something that we can use to quickly gain insights about a text (or, more frequently, multiple texts in comparison)

Lab

More time than you’ve ever had.

I hope you don’t need it.
