Administrative stuff

Introductory notes

  • Sit where you’d like (within reason).
  • If folks are missing today, I’ll probably run a meeting on Teams.
  • There’s a new category on grades for SoLA 4: “Please talk with Sam”
    • You’re close, but not close enough that I can give you a point.
    • You’re far, and I’d like to make sure that we resolve confusion.
    • Something in between.
  • Next week, I’ll be in my office most of the day. Feel free to propose meeting times in whatever way you find best.
    • Microsoft Bookings is off

The last Friday PSA

  • Be true to yourself.
  • Take care of those around you.
  • Everything in moderation.
  • Consent is essential.

Q&A

Why did you tell us to bring a pen?

Forthcoming.

The Pen Exercise

I have written the names of the students in the class on Teams.

Each of you has a stack of white cards.

For five names that follow you (wrapping around as necessary, skipping folks you haven’t worked with), write the name on the top of the card and then something you appreciate about them as partners or members of CSC-151 this semester.

Pick three other names and do the same thing. You might choose people who’ve had an impact on you in the class. You might choose folks who you worry won’t get enough comments.

The subject matter of the course

At some point, I’ll rant more about EOCEs.

For now … Five of the six questions have the form “This thing helped me learn the subject matter of the course.”

I think of there being subject matters of the course.

  • Problem solving
  • Computer science, including algorithms and data structures
  • Software development
  • Functional Programming
  • Scheme/Racket
  • General thinking skills
  • And beyond

Activity:

  • On teams, fill in something for each category.
  • Also add something to the “Recommendations for next semester’s students” document.

Course evals

Ah, the wonders of technology. http://grinnell.smartevals.com.

  • Ignore the pandemic-related questions.

Someone grab me from the other room when you’re mostly done.

Final comments

  • The last day of class is hard for faculty.

Part one: Acknowledge the relationships

Part two: Acknowledge each other

  • Done!

Part three: Say goodbye

  • Bye!
