A communication printed in the Grinnell Register last Monday condemns the policy of the Scarlet and Black management in accepting certain matter in the advertising columns of the paper. The portion of the communication which refers to this publication is printed herewith, as passed on to us by our contemporary: "What is the position of our college on this question? The Register stands alone in its refusal to advertise these plays. But what can be said when the official college paper prints such advertisements? Is it possible that the opinions and desires of the faculty and of the better class of students are disregarded; or can it be that they are willing to be represented by a paper that not only does not oppose but actually lends its influence in favor of such forces of evil, by printing advertisements of 'The Traffic', 'September Morn' and similar productions? If the present board of editors does not represent the sentiment of the majority of the college peope, it is supposed to and those who do not openly protest against such laxity give consent by their silence." We have no desire to avoid the issue presented in this article. Plainly, then, we believe that our critic expects too much of a publication which is not published with a certain specific aim in view. If the Scarlet and Black were engaged in a campaign for the uplift of the drama, the management would exert its utmost efforts in acquainting itself with the nature of every production scheduled to appear in Grinnell. However, not being present engaged in the prosecution of such reform, we must plead ignorance in many such cases. It is said that we might well institute such a reform in Grinnell. Granted - but there are other problems and situations just as worthy of our attention, and who is to say that we shall exert our efforts in any one direction, to the detriment of any other movement? Again, it is said that no special knowledge was necessary in the present instance; that the mere name of the production was sufficient to declare its character. Judged from this view, "Within the Law", one of the best dramas that has appeared in Grinnell recently, would have been refused advertising space. The only authoritative comment concerning "September Morn" that came to our attention prior to its appearance was favourable. We believe that our critic is unfair, in attributing to us an omniscence that we do not possess. He might be interested in knowing that the Scarlet and Black management has in its hands at present a letter from a faculty member commending the publication upon its advertising policy. He might also be interested in knowing that the paper has refused numerous remunerative contracts this year, because the matter did not meet with its - the management's - approval. Again, the Scarlet and Black refused to co-operate in an attempt to form an agreement, among the college newspapers of the state, to publish tobacco advertising - the most remunerative of all. In these instances, the acceptance of such matter was, to us, plainly in controversion of the policy that should be pursued by a college publication, and we take no credit for doing what we should expect any Scarlet and Black management to do.
