Design Our design exhibits aspects of contrast, and negative/positive space. We have created a colorful and busy background that attracts the eye and acts as positive space, and juxtaposed it with a quiet and clean foreground image (specifically, a silhouetted vase of flowers) in white. This creates an interesting and aesthetically balanced product. The series' background features a checkerboard pattern in a creative range of colors, and the shape and fullness of the foreground silhouette also varies. Our background's design is much more solidified in intent than it was originally. It now consistently produces a checkerboard pattern with slices of distinct color combinations. Technique The background image makes use of iteration over positions with image-compute. This allows us to use conditionals, when, and if statements to form a checkered pattern and subsequently vary the colors in sections of the pattern. The end result is a contrast of distinct colors. The foreground of the image, the vase and flowers, are drawn using a combination of gimp tools (i.e. selecting, stroking, and filling) and turtle graphics. A selection of two ovals subtracted from a selection of a rectangle forms the vase. Turtles draw the stems of the flowers by repeating a movement and turn dependent upon the given n variable (this allows the stems to respond to increasing values of n by blooming and to decreasing values of n by wilting). The petals and head of the flower are drawn through repeated spirals, creating an overall shape more organic than geometric. Combined, the procedure creates one thousand distinct images. With regards to the foreground, the variable n controls the position of the flowers as well as the filling of the vase. With regards to the background, n controls the colors used in the checkerboard pattern and the position and angle of any shifts in background color.
