Course Goals

CS 223 is somewhat of a hybrid course which covers issues in software design, software engineering, group work, human factors, and much more. It is expected that you will develop at least a basic understanding of these and other issues.

By departmental consensus, the primary goals of the course are to enhance your abilities to understand and solve problems on the computer, and to discuss and document your solutions.

These goals, as stated in the department's planning document for the course, are

• Students should experience working on a team on a large software project.
• Students should learn to use basic software-engineering tools.
• Students should learn to avoid common errors in software development by appropriate application of software-engineering principles.
• Students should become acquainted with a variety of algorithm-design techniques.
• Students should be able to discuss (either in summary or in detail) their programming work.
