CSC 151 class code of conduct

As a member of CSC 151, I understand that my words and actions can affect others in the class, particularly because the course relies closely on paired activities. Hence, I will do my best to abide by the following general principles developed by our class.

In all situations …

  • Given that small variations in word choice can have large impacts on the way people react, I will do my best to pay attention to the language I use, and to be conscientious about the words that I use.
  • I will do my best to treat my partner and myself as a group, saying “we” rather than “I” in cases of both credit and blame.
  • When discussing potential errors, I will do my best to suggest, rather than to blame.
  • I will do my best to avoid talking when others are talking, particularly when my peers are answering questions posed in class.
  • I will do my best to be open and honest.
  • I will do my best to own my confusion and be clear about what I do and do not understand.
  • I will do my best to be empathetic and give others, particularly my partner, the benefit of the doubt.
  • I will do my best to acknowledge to others when I have not done appropriate preparatory work.
  • I will do my best to listen to the ideas of others and consider them fairly.
  • I will do my best “check in” with myself, considering whether conflicts may be my responsibility rather than other people’s.
  • I will do my best to acknowledge that I do not know or understand everything.
  • I will do my best to not rush my partner.
  • I will do my best to treat everyone as valuable and not ask them to prove their worth, particularly when I am dealing with people who may be underrepresented in computing, such as women, people of color, and those not on the gender binary.
  • I will do my best to embrace the strengths of other students.
  • I will do my best to pay attention to non-verbal queues.
  • I will not take credit for the work or ideas of others.

For lab work …

  • I will do my best to regularly switch driver and navigator with my partner or partners. At the start of each lab, I will discuss with my partner the policy we wish to use in switching.
  • As driver, I will do my best to talk out loud while writing and coding.
  • As navigator, I will do my best to focus on what my driver is doing, to provide my driver with positive advice and guidance, and to serve as a knowledge resource.
  • I will wait until class time to do the lab.
  • I will do my best to complete the lab writeup with my partner, even if that means meeting again later.
  • I will carbon-copy my partner when I submit lab writeups.
  • I will make sure to share the lab code with my partner so that they continue to have access to it after class.

When working on homework assignments …

  • I will do my best to read the assignment in preparation for meeting with my partner.
  • I will not start to generate code before meeting with my partner.
  • I will do my best to talk through ideas with my partner before we begin coding.
  • I will carbon-copy my partner when I submit assignments.
  • I will do my best to respond promptly to email from my partner and to keep them informed if I am unable to meet at a designated time.
  • I will be understanding of my partner’s potential conflicts.

You may choose to cross off any of these items before signing. However, you must then discuss your reasons for doing so with Prof. Rebelsky.
